Facts about Heart Disease

Heart attacks at young age is observed quite often now a days and is a matter of grave concern for all of us. We have observed in last two decades that more and more young people are falling prey to heart disease.

There is an inherent genetic disadvantage of being Indian as studies suggest that Asian Indians have high levels of lipoprotein (a), which is a variant of LDL Cholesterol.

Indians are also genetically predisposed to develop metabolic syndrome, a condition which is associated with doubling the risk for cardiovascular disease.

A positive family history of heart disease is also a strong predictor of likelihood of developing it in coming generation.

Lifestyle again is very important factor for predicting who all can develop heart disease. In fact lifestyle changes can prevent and stave off further heart attacks, no matter what genes you carry.

So, sustained efforts on lifestyle changes rewards. Smoking is a risk factor and after quitting it, it takes 15 years for an individual to cut down heart disease chances compared to a non-smoker person.

Smokers are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease as compared to non smokers. It is essential to avoid trans-fatty acids and to switch to poly and mono unsaturated fatty acids.

By adopting very simple habits like limiting consumption of free sugars and salt, eating whole grain, nuts and 3-4 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables reduces your chances of heart attack.

30 minutes workout (aerobic exercise) every day cuts the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 30%, a recent recommendation by World heart federation. A 30 minute walk, 5 days a week can decrease the risk of stroke by 24%

One must know that over 33% of patients who suffer heart attack die within 24 hours if left untreated. Half of them i.e. 16 % of heart attack victims die within one hour of heart attack.
